In 1998, 6 years after his sister’s tragic death, Dr. Wall was invited to participate in a Victim Offender dialogue with the man who killed her. Another seven years later, he agreed. That single experience set into motion Dr. Wall’s mission to integrate restorative practices into every aspect of his personal and professional life.
In 2009, Dr. Wall presented at the 13th Restorative Justice Conference at Fresno Pacific University alongside the man who was responsible for his sister’s death. This joint effort demonstrated the impact of “healing the harm” when done within a restorative framework. Since then, he has become a certified trainer in the Discipline That Restores model for school restorative discipline practices. He has worked with and been trained by leaders in the field, including Howard Zehr, Co-Director of the Zehr Institute for Restorative Justice and widely known as the “grandfather of restorative justice”; Kay Pranis, national leader in Restorative Justice and author of Peacemaking Circles: From Crime to Community & Doing Democracy with Circles; and Ron and Roxanne Claassen, co-authors of Discipline That Restores and founder of the first Victim Offender Reconciliation Program (VORP) in California. Dr. Wall is an active member of the St. Louis Area Restorative Justice Collaboration and is actively supportive of increasing the public’s awareness of restorative practices.
Most recently, Dr. Wall has developed ReGroup, a unique restorative alternative to traditional school suspensions that is currently being used locally. Dr. Wall creates opportunities for students, schools, families and communities impacted by crime and conflict to approach rule violations from a restorative perspective. Dr. Wall believes that restorative practices offer a unique opportunity for individuals and communities to heal and create peace within relationships.
In addition to his work with schools, Dr. Wall counsels individuals, couples, and families at his private counseling practice, Restorative Psychological Services, Inc. Within his practice, Dr. Wall regularly utilizes restorative approaches to help his clients heal pain caused by depression, anxiety, grief and relationship conflicts with a goal of restoring peace.
Dr. Wall has a PhD in Clinical Psychology and a M.S. in Educational Counseling, and is licensed as a professional counselor in Missouri. Dr. Wall lives in St. Louis with his wife Kate and three daughters.
